NIGERIA – French multinational integrated oil and gas company, Total Group has said it will build a plastics recycling plant in Nigeria.
The plant according to the oil multinational will be used to convert waste to useful products as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility agenda.
The oil major said that that the sustainable pilot plant is expected to recycle 800 tons of polyethylene and polypropylene yearly from dumpsite in the country.
“Feedstock will be supplied by a network of existing dealers and the 600 tons per year output will be sold to plastic converters for production of commodity products like bags and buckets,” said Mr Vincent Nnadi, Total Nigeria’s Executive General Manager for CSR.
He said the pilot project would be started in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, adding that the oil company was also considering clean-up project for the Lagos Lagoon.
Mr. Nnadi further revealed that Total Nigeria is working with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research as a partner in the implementation of the project.
“Because we are a stakeholder in our host communities, Total Foundation has made a commitment to enhancing their development, with a special focus on youth,” said Nnadi.
He also described Total as a strategic and reliable partner in the communities where it carries its operations having invested a total of US$10 billion in Nigeria in the last tive years.
“We believe in contributing to the economic and social development of stakeholders. Over 50,000 students have benefited from our scholarship scheme at all levels since inception,” added Nnadi.
Nnadi said over 1,000 youths had been trained annually on various skills including welding and fabrication, scaffolding, Information and communications technology, and fashion designing.
The company also reiterated its commitment to the provision of basic infrastructure in communities.
The head of CSR said that Total’s strategy is to bring healthcare nearer to the people. He further said that the Oil major contributes to improvement of infrastructure in hospital and donates equipment, ambulances, medications for community hospitals.
He also said about 50,000 farmers had benefited from the company’s agriculture development scheme in the supply of improved seedlings and training.
Total Group has been active in Nigeria for more than 60 years in oil and gas exploration and production, natural gas liquefaction and the marketing of petroleum products and related services.
According to the company’s website, Total Nigeria Plc is actively involved in community outreach initiatives, with a focus on health, access to water and education.
