GHANA – Karpowership Ghana Company Limited, one of the largest producers of electricity in Ghana, has resumed operations.

The company had shut down operations at its powership, a floating power plant, for over three weeks to allow for relocation.

Previously the Kapowership plant was located in Tema but had to be moved to its current station at Sekondi Naval Base. The decision to relocate the power plant was informed by the need to improve the facility’s efficiency.

In a statement to the press, the company stated that all requisite commissioning works and operational tests have been completed and the powership has begun supplying power to the national grid

“The 470MW Powership would continue to operate on Heavy Fuel Oil to supply reliable and sustainable electricity to the national grid until ongoing works on the gas pipeline are completed and the pipeline is fully commissioned,” the statement said.

The government said that the decision to relocate the powership facility from Tema to the Western region was cost effective and would enable the power production facility to efficiently utilise the natural gas from its Western Enclave.

Ghana Gas plans to supply about 60 to 70 million standard cubic feet worth of gas on a daily basis to Karpowership as from October this year.

It revealed that plans to supply gas from the Atuoabu gas processing facility to the Karpowership were on track and that 85 percent of the work which includes setting up and laying pipelines to connect the two facility had already been completed.

Karpowership power production facility with a capacity of 470 megawatts of power supplies the national grid with 450-megawatts of power.

The company entered into a Power Purchase Agreement with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) at a time when Ghana was in a power crisis.

The agreement required Karpowership Ghana Company Limited to provide a total of 450 megawatts and directly feed it into the national grid for 10 years.

Karpowership Ghana Company Limited is a member of the Karadeniz Energy Group, an international power production company based in Turkey.

Karadeniz Energy Group owns and operates more than 3,800 MW of installed power capacity and is the only builder, operator and owner of the Powerships in the world.

Apart from Ghana, Karpowership supplies significant amounts of energy to Gambia, Guinea Bissau, Mozambique, Sierra Leone, Sudan, and Zambia.
