IVORY COAST-The government of Ivory Coast has inaugurated 2 water towers in the Moronou region to improve access to clean drinking water to the people living in the area.

The Ivorian Minister of Hydraulics, Laurent Tchagba, presided over the commissioning of the two water towers.

In Moronou, the two water towers with a combined capacity of 130 cubic metres are specifically located in the villages of Boussoukro and Bouaffoukro

Afrik21 in its report indicated that the projects are in line with government of Ivory Coast’s goal of providing drinking water to all Ivorians by 2030.

According to a recent study by Global Nature Fund, Ivory Coast water access rate is one of the highest in sub Saharan Africa with over 70% of Ivorians being reported to have a stable supply of water.

In march this year, the government of Ivory Coast announced plans to develop 17 drinking water supply systems across the country in an effort to raise the access rate to 100%.

The National Drinking Water Utility of Ivory Coast (ONEP) awarded the project contract to French company Vergnet Hydro and Ivorian company Abeda.

The water projects aligned to Ivory Coast’s goal of providing drinking water to all Ivorians will be developed in the rural areas of Ivory Coast and will involve the construction of 12 electric and 5 mixed (solar/electric or solar/thermal) water supply systems.

The water tower of Boussoukro has a storage capacity of 80 m3 of water at a height of 12 m.

It will supply the populations of Boussoukro and three surrounding villages, namely Offa, Kodimasso and Bodo.

Its construction was entirely financed by the Ivorian government to the tune of nearly 340.8 million CFA francs (about US$616,773)

The Bouaffoukro water tower, on the other hand, has a storage capacity of 50 m3 with a height of 12 m.

It was constructed at a cost of 135 million CFA francs (approximately US$244,572).

“Bouaffoukro had a rudimentary and obsolete village hydraulic system with a low production capacity. A situation that forced the population to turn to wells and ponds for water supplies despite the risk of water-borne diseases.”

Laurent Tchagba- Ivorian Minister of Hydraulics

After commissioning the two water towers, Minister Laurent Tchagba proceeded to launch the first water tower in the Division of Assahara, still in the Moronou region.

The installation will have a storage capacity of 200 m3 with a height of 15 metres, making it possible to supply up to 12,300 inhabitants with drinking water in Assahara, as well as certain surrounding localities.

The Ivorian government plans to invest 554 million CFA francs (about US$1 million) to carry out this project.
