GHANA – The Government of Ghana has received grants worth US$7.9 million from the Government of Japan to support the completion of key development projects in the country.
A report by Ghana Web revealed that the Tema Motorway interchange is among the projects set to benefit from the Japanese funding.
The grants reception was attended by Deputy Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Minister Hon. Charles Owiredu who represented the government of Ghana and His Excellency Mr. Himeno Tsutomu who was present on behalf of Japan.
The grants are expected to improve various sectors of the country’s economy including health, infrastructure, and human resource development.
Japan’s Ambassador to Ghana Mr. Tsutomu at the signing ceremony indicated that the grant is a showcase of the strong Japan-Ghana friendship and partnership.
“It is the wish of the people and the government of Japan that these projects will make valuable contributions in the areas of health, road infrastructure, and human resource development,” he said.
According to the memorandum of understanding between Japan and Ghana, US$4.5 million of the grants is expected to go into the health sector.
The money would be used to support the health sector by providing equipment including CT scan, radiography System, Thermography, Ambulance, and Water Tanker among others.
Another US$1 million out of the US7.9 million is also expected to support phase two of the Tema Motorway Interchange project while US$2.4 million will facilitate Human Resource Development by supporting the Japan Scholarship Scheme to Ghana.
Earlier this month, the government of Ghana also received a total of US$430,000 from the Canadian High Commission in Ghana.
The funds from the High Commission are expected to boost efforts by the government to support women in agribusiness.
A statement released by the Canadian High Commission, explained that the support was in line with its Feminist International Assistance Policy (FIAP), which seeks to empower women to eradicate poverty and build a more peaceful, more inclusive and more prosperous world.
