KENYA – The board of Kenya’s Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has appointed Mueni Mutunga as the acting Director General position, replacing Pavel Oimeke, whose term ended on August 1st 2020.

The outgoing director-general Pavel Oimeke was asked to step aside after his reappointment for another three-year term was contested in court.

Mr Oimeke was appointed as EPRA’s Director-General on August 1, 2017 on a renewable three-year term. The extension of his contract has, however, been contested over allegations of abuse of office and corruption at the energy regulator.

“Action taken regarding the occupancy of the office of Director-General has led to a petition filed in court. The court, in exercise of its constitutional mandate, has issued conservatory orders, which the board must obey,” said Mr Ojwang’ in the memo.

“These orders have compelled the board to require the Director-General Mr Oimeke to step aside, until the judicial restrictions are lifted through orders made in court.”

Prior to joining EPRA, Mutunga, who hold a master’s degree in Business Administration, was the Corporation Secretary and Head of Legal Services at the Kenya Wildlife Service.

Mueni Mutunga is the EPRA Board Secretary and Director Legal Services. She is responsible for providing legal advisory services to the Authority to ensure compliance with existing law and regulatory requirements.

Her career started at Robson Harris & Co advocates where she worked as an advocate. She later moved to Total Kenya Ltd. where she worked as a legal officer. Prior to joining EPRA, she was the Corporation Secretary of Kenya Wildlife Service.

Mutunga holds a Master in Business Administration and a Bachelor of Laws degree both from the University of Nairobi. She also holds a Diploma in Legal practice from the Kenya School of Law. She has also trained extensively in Good Corporate Governance and is a member of the Institute of Directors and the Law Society of Kenya.
