KENYA – Jumia Kenya, an ecommerce and logistics company, has appointed Juan Seco as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
Juan replaces Betty Mwangi, a seasoned tech executive, who has held the post for barely a year. In a statement, the company says Ms Mwangi has left to pursue a ‘big impact opportunity’.
Betty Mwangi took the mantle of leadership at Jumia Kenya at the end of 2021 from Sam Chappate who was promoted to a senior role within the Group after serving as CEO for five years. Her tenure has seen her serve the company for under nine months.
Mwangi previously served as the Group Commercial Director for Britam between 2016 and 2021.
She previously worked as the Director of Financial Services for Safaricom’s M-Pesa during its formative years from 2007 to 2016.
The incoming CEO has been with Jumia Kenya since 2015 when he joined as Chief Financial Officer (CFO).
He was responsible for all financial aspects and reporting of Jumia’s ventures in the country, including Jumia, Jumia Travel (Jovago), Jumia Food (Hellofood), Jumia House (Lamudi), Jumia Services and Jumia Deals.
Juan later became part of the founding team of JumiaPay as Chief Operating Officer (COO) overseeing the expansion and deployment of JumiaPay across Jumia markets.
He was the Senior Vice President of Consumer Financial Services leading fintech initiatives and the JumiaPay App.
He was responsible for all consumer-related services. His roles at JumiaPay included strategic initiatives related to consumers including P2P solutions, Buy Now Pay Later, as well as virtual and physical cards.
Prior to joining Jumia, Seco worked at Dexia, and audit firms PwC and KPMG. His wealth of experience spans more than two decades.
Seco is also an alumnus of McGill University, where he undertook a course in Commerce.
