NIGERIA – Glovo, a delivery startup, has partnered with Siltech, an electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, to transform the food delivery landscape in Nigeria.
This collaboration aims to introduce electric vehicle delivery services in some parts of Lagos, promising significant cost savings and environmental benefits.
The high cost of petrol has been a significant burden for businesses in Nigeria, weighing heavily on the economy. However, this challenge has prompted many companies and individuals to explore alternative solutions, with electric vehicles (EVs) emerging as a viable option.
Recognizing the potential advantages of EVs, Glovo has taken a proactive step by partnering with Siltech to leverage their EV products and services for delivery operations.
Tolu Williams, the CEO of Siltech, confirmed the partnership, stating that Glovo has signed on to utilize the company’s comprehensive EV service ecosystem.
This includes access to charging stations, after-sales services, technical support, and battery swap facilities.
The initial pilot program will commence in Ikate, Lekki, and Victoria Island in Lagos, where Siltech has established charging and battery swap stations.
One of the key features of this partnership is the integration of Siltech’s battery swap technology.
The Siltech Ginsu bikes, which Glovo riders will use, can swap drained batteries for fully charged ones in minutes.
This innovative solution eliminates the need for lengthy charging periods, ensuring seamless and efficient delivery operations.
While the partnership has been formalized, a Glovo spokesperson confirmed that deliveries with the EV bikes would not commence for a few months.
However, when the service is launched, Tolu Williams estimates a significant cost reduction in EV services, as Siltech will provide multiple services to Glovo at a discounted rate, making it more cost-effective than relying on petrol-powered vehicles.
Siltech’s recent transition from solely manufacturing EVs to offering a complete EV service ecosystem has positioned the company as a prominent player.
The company already serves Tesla owners and a growing number of EV users who utilize the ecosystem for charging and other EV-related services.
The partnership between Glovo and Siltech represents a significant step towards sustainability and cost-efficiency in the food delivery industry.
By leveraging electric vehicles and innovative technologies, businesses can reduce their carbon footprint while cutting operational costs.
This collaboration could encourage other delivery companies and businesses to embrace environmentally friendly transportation solutions, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable future for Lagos and potentially other parts of Nigeria.
