SOUTH AFRICA – African Bank has appointed Unathi Mtya as group chief information officer, the retail bank has announced in a press statement.

Mtya also joins the group executive committee.

Headquartered in Midrand, South Africa, African Bank is licensed as a locally-controlled bank by the South African Reserve Bank and has a countrywide branch distribution network.

Mtya joins African Bank from Grindrod Bank, where she served as chief technology officer.

At Grindrod Bank, she was responsible for the efficient handling of the bank’s IT, planning and aligning IT within the business and managing the transition to new technologies.

Additionally, she spent time understanding the biggest technology trends in the banking industry, namely the acceleration of new technologies, the collaboration of banks and fintech firms, and the growing importance of customer experience, says the statement.

Says Kennedy Bungane, African Bank CEO: “Unathi is a tech enthusiast, a speaker as well as a member of the Forbes Technology Council. She will provide the required skill and expertise to translate our ongoing digital strategy into value-add experiences for our customers and continue to build and expand on our IT capabilities.”

During her career, Mtya led multi-disciplinary technical teams across the ICT spectrum at senior management, general management and chief information/technology levels.

She has also held key positions at BCX, the State IT Agency and Parliament.

She holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Fort Hare, a professional certificate in CIO practice from Wits University and a Master of Science in technology management from Columbia University in New York, US.

“I have always been an advocate of value,” said Mtya.

“My remit will include the consideration and implementation of technology platforms that provide value across all digital capabilities of African Bank,” she added.

Her appointment comes barely three weeks after the retail lender strengthened its board with a new non-executive appointment.

Nonzukiso (Zukie) Siyotula was appointed as a non-executive director of Johannesburg-headquartered African Bank and its holding company, African Bank Holdings, effective from 13 August 2021.

The appointment followed the bank’s recruitment of a new chief marketing officer,  Sbusiso Kumalo, from Capitec Bank, earlier in August, and the arrival of former Phembani CEO Kennedy Bungane as African Bank Holdings’ Chief Executive Officer and executive director in May 2021.
