SUDAN – The African Development Bank (AfDB) has earmarked about US$115m in grants for the next three years to finance public sector projects and programs in Sudan

President of the Bank, Dr. Akinumwi Adesina revealed this during the recently concluded Sudan Partnership Conference in Berlin, Germany.

The meeting which was conducted virtually and co-hosted by the Republic of the Sudan, the Federal Republic of Germany, the European Union and the United Nations attracted from 50 other countries and international institutions.

While opening the conference, Heiko Maas, Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs of Germany said it was “a responsibility to stand by the people of Sudan and their revolution.”

Heiko commended, Sudan’s Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, saying,  “You have done a remarkable job of leading the country through the transition so far. I offer you Germany’s full support.”

AfDB President, Dr. Adesina in his remarks during a panel discussion said “The African Development Bank has always been with Sudan from the very beginning. We never left Sudan for one day, even all the while that it was under economic sanctions. That is because we believe in Sudan.”

The US$155 million grant, according to Adesina, is in addition to about $215 million grants provided in the last three years.

Adesina explained that the Bank would provide Sudan with a grant of US$30 million to help it strengthen its health care systems so that they can be better placed to fight the Covid-19 pandemic.

During the conference, France, offered to host a high-level conference to launch the debt relief process for Sudan, allowing the full reintegration of Sudan into the international economic community.

Sudan’s transitional government has made economic reforms and the recovery of assets stolen by its previous leaders, both domestically and internationally a priority.

The government of Sudan has also made the revival of productive sectors of the economy, job creation and inclusive and sustainable peace, the cornerstones of its reform process.
